![]() ![]() She soon abandoned this to concentrate on political science. In 1933, Duras embarked alone for Paris to study law and mathematics. Duras returned to Saigon again with Paul and her mother in 1932 and completed her second baccalaureate, leaving Pierre in France. In 1931, when she was 17, Duras and her family moved to France and she completed her baccalaureate. The family struggled financially and her mother made a bad investment in an isolated property and area of rice farmland in Prey Nob, a story which was fictionalized in Un Barrage contre le Pacifique. They then moved back to French Indochina when she was posted to Phnom Penh followed by Vĩnh Long and Sa Đéc. Between 19, the surviving family lived in France while her mother was on administrative leave. Henri Donnadieu fell ill, returned to France, and then died in 1921. Marguerite had two older siblings: Pierre, the eldest, and Paul. ![]() ![]() Her parents, Marie (née Legrand, 1877-1956) and Henri Donnadieu (1872-1921), were teachers from France who likely had met at Gia Định High School. Look, but don’t touch!Įven more, it dissipates because Finney is using Morley’s presence in 1882 to describe what life is like on the streets and in the homes of that year - how people were back then. In part, that’s because he’s been warned not to do anything that might alter the course of history. That suspense dissipates somewhat when Morley makes the first two of four trips across 88 years. ![]() It’s a suspense story, at least for the first 40 or so pages, when Morley is being recruited for what he’s told is an adventure that can’t initially be specified and then for the next 70 pages as he’s tested, accepted and trained for his journey. So, there’s no wormhole, no elaborate machinery, just auto-suggestion. Here’s how it works: Simon Morley, a commercial artist and the novel’s central character, steeps himself in the history and daily life of 1882, then he lives for a time in a setting that hasn’t changed since then (the Dakota Apartments in New York City) and then he self-hypnotizes himself, falls asleep and, when he awakens, he’s back there in time. The method for making such a trip, though, doesn’t have much snap. ![]() It’s a science fiction novel inasmuch as it deals with time travel. Jack Finney’s 1970 time-travel novel Time and Again is a lot of things, including a cult favorite. ![]() 6/28/2023 0 Comments Taproot graphic novel![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The chill pastel beauty of Taproot is disrupted after the short introductory act by a black and white forest that Blue becomes lost in. We meet Hamal’s best friend Blue, a lonely ghostly teen who goes by April, and a young girl named Joey who Blue and Hamal take in on the first day that they meet. Young’s art is so emotive that the book is immediately moving, not least because Hamal’s spiritual companions are all relatively young. He’s a talented gardener who offers advice to his customers at Takeshi’s Flowers whilst balancing his other special set of skills–because Hamal, well, Hamal can see ghosts. Seeped in a palette of pastel blues and greens with splashes of peach, Taproot’s first act introduces us to Hamal. If you’re lucky, you may have caught Taproot in its original incarnation as a webcomic, but this gorgeous graphic novel printing is completely redrawn and 40 pages longer so fans of the original still have something new to discover. ![]() With Taproot, Keezy Young has created something sweet, sombre, and special that bleeds beauty from the moment you see the opening double-page spread. It may sound hyperbolic but it’s the truth. Taproot is an astoundingly beautiful book, I just have to start by saying that. I was so slow, aching everywhere physically and emotionally. I can feel the memory of the ache in my lower abdomen from the fresh stitches, holding my recently repaired self with my hands when I got up to have a shower, feeling like my insides might fall outside my body if I wasn’t careful. The clothes we had brought with us were too big for her we didn’t have a hat, just a perfect wool blanket knitted by Sue from work, a confection of pastels around her tiny body. This was maddening! Listening more carefully, Querry heard some of the pins slipping free as others snapped into place. He tried every other lock and then the ones he skipped. ![]() “Some combination?” he asked the empty room. This was it, the solution, but why didn’t it open? He tried the locks in reverse. “What? Why?” Querry paced back and forth in front of the wall, fist balled against his mouth. He used the nail in each of the seven holes and stood back. Subtleties of the sounds they made told him if the pins had clicked into place. Leaning closer, Querry listened and visualized the mechanisms within the stone. This lock operated on the same system as the one he’d built to protect his room: the pins had to be pushed into the tumblers in a specific order. A smile broke across Querry’s face as he removed the nail and fit it into the next hole. ![]() |
